The Director, Immune Regulation is responsible for leading the development and implementation of the Drug Discovery Strategy for Immune Regulation in Oncology Research at Boehringer Ingelheim (BI), Ridgefield CT research site. The incumbent will be a senior scientific expert and drug discovery leader with management responsibilities for a group (approximately 10-20) of discovery scientists, post-doctoral fellow, and co-op students. The team will focus on the discovery of new therapeutic concepts (NTC), target identification and validation, target biology/mechanism elucidation, research biomarker discovery, and drug candidate selection. 

Strong interactions and collaboration with immuno-oncology/oncology discovery teams in Ridgefield and at other BI sites is expected. In addition to supporting the advancement of the Oncology portfolio through internal efforts, the Director, Immune Regulation is expected to establish and/or support partnerships with external experts. This individual will report directly to the VP Oncology Research.

Duties & Responsibilities

Portfolio Support - Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):

  • Establishes and implements the vision for Immune Regulation within Oncology Research.
  • Collaborates with global peers to advance the Oncology portfolio.
  • Represents the group/therapeutic area and demonstrates accountability and decision-making deliverables to stakeholders across BI organization.


Portfolio Support: New Therapeutic Concepts:

  • Drives innovative science to enable success of Immune Regulation/Oncology Research, by bringing new ideas, novel perspectives, and deep mechanistic understanding to drug discovery.
  • Provides scientific leadership and ensure overall effectiveness of the Immune Regulation group by guiding the group's efforts, managing resources to meet the department and company goals and training/mentoring/coaching to develop the team.
  • Works closely with the Research Portfolio Committees (RPCs) to deliver on the pipeline from Target Discovery to Development Candidate stage, including identification and assessment of external opportunities and technologies.


Internal and External Research Network Establishment:

  • Works closely with Translational Medicine Clinical Pharmacology (TMCP) to ensure the Discovery efforts on biomarker identification and assay implementation meet the needs of the programs, in terms of patient and indication selection.
  • Partners with other Discovery Research functions including to facilitate progress of programs.
  • Identifies, develops, and manages a network of internal and external scientific academic and biotechnology partnerships to discover novel biology and NTC that can be integrated into the portfolio.
  • Ensures the Immune regulation and Oncology Research teams build a strong reputation for BI in the external community by publishing, actively participating and presenting at scientific conferences.


People:

  • Builds and develops the Immune Regulation group in Ridgefield, CT to advance BI's Oncology Research portfolio.
  • Retains and develops high quality staff.
  • Responsible for performance management of direct and indirect reports.
  • Manages business risk through talent development, coaching, mentoring, training, and succession planning.


Operations and Leadership:

  • Provides strong leadership, clear direction, development opportunities and open communication to direct and indirect reports.
  • Ensures compliance with all required training, safety, regulatory, HR, laboratory notebook and intellectual property activities and corporate policies for self and team.

Requirements

  • PhD, MD, or MD/PhD in immunology, oncology, or related field with at least 10 years of professional experience in research, with a minimum of five (5) years in the Biopharmaceutical/Biotech industry.
  • Expertise in discovery research with a strong scientific background in immunology preferably immuno-oncology is essential with familiarity in clinical drug development for cancer immunology/immunotherapy strongly favored.
  • Familiarity with discovery of therapeutic biologics/monoclonal antibodies and/or an understanding of small molecule drug discovery highly desirable.
  • A strong publication record, reputation, and well-established scientific network.
  • A proven track-record in effectively building and leading teams ideally in a global organization.
  • Proven strong management and interpersonal skills required, with demonstrated line and matrix-leadership experience of a team of senior experts in the industry environment preferred.
  • Experience in collaborating with teams across geographic boundaries.
  • Excellent communication skills, collaborative behaviors, and motivational skills

Compensation:

This position, Director, offers a base salary typically between$200,000.00 and $316,000.00. The position may be eligible for a role specific variable or performance based bonus and or other compensation elements.For an overview of our benefits please click here.
