Position Summary

The Senior Vice President of Finance serves as the strategic financial leader of the Human Rights Campaign, HRC Foundation, and affiliated political action committees and directs the day-to-day management and operations of the Finance team. In partnership with the President, Chief Operating Officer, board leadership and senior team, the SVP of Finance develops and implements financial strategy to advance our mission and goals, overseeing a combined annual budget of $70+ million.

The SVP of Finance leads a team that is responsible for performing core financial operations as well as budgeting, forecasting, monitoring, and reporting; ensuring compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, grant agreements, and regulatory requirements; managing cash and investments for short- and long-term stability; and providing reporting, financial analysis, insights and recommendations to the senior team and the HRC and HRCF Boards of Directors.

The person in this role serves as a Corporate Officer of the Human Rights Campaign, its associated PACs and the HRC Foundation. They report to the Chief Operating Officer, serve on the senior leadership team, and manage a team of professional staff. They work collaboratively with staff across the organization, especially with teams in Development and Membership, People and Operations, IT and Data Analytics, and the Office of the General Counsel.

The ideal candidate for this role holds a CPA license and has financial leadership experience in an organization with multiple 501(c) entities and diverse sources of revenue. They thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic and inclusive workplace, have demonstrated experience advancing the use of technology to achieve process efficiencies and improvement and are an active listener and skilled communicator.

This position is based in the HRC headquarters located in Washington, DC. Salary is commensurate with experience with the range beginning at $250,000.00.

Position Responsibilities

  • Provide overall leadership to and day-to-day management of the Finance department, including performing or delegating Controller-related functions. Direct all financial operations, including the accounting, reporting, budgeting, insurance, payroll, and analytical systems and functions.
  • Serve as the primary staff partner to the Finance Committees of the HRC and HRCF Boards of Directors. Partner with the Board and senior leaders on financial governance policies and procedures.
  • Manage relationships and negotiations with external partners, including banks, insurance brokers, auditors, and other financial service providers.
  • Lead the development and monitoring of the annual budget, including leading the budget process, facilitating strategic decision-making with Board and senior leaders, assisting directors and managers with budget development, overseeing re-forecasting, and providing other necessary analysis for on-going monitoring of the organizational budget.
  • Manage cash and investments, including reserves. Prepare analyses and cashflow forecasts to guide financial decision-making.
  • Oversee the preparation and review of financial reports and internal and external audits; ensure that financial statements are prepared on time and in compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
  • Oversee financial aspects of contracts, ensuring compliance and alignment with organizational budget and priorities.
  • Manage corporate insurance coverage for multiple entities.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance systems, leverage existing functionality, and drive efficiency across finance-related processes. Lead the selection and implementation of financial technology solutions as needed.
  • Conduct capital budget planning and implementation as needed.
  • Serve as a key leader of the Operations Division which includes Finance, People and Operations, and IT and Data Analytics departments. Collaborate with leaders across the organization to understand needs, challenges and opportunities and translate them into actionable financial strategies.

Position Qualifications

  • 15+ years of financial management experience, preferably in the national nonprofit sector. Demonstrated experience developing and managing a $50+ million operating budget;
    • MBA, CPA or CMA required.
  • Demonstrated experience with multiple 501(c) entities, including cost sharing agreements and cost allocation methods;
  • Experience with political and lobbying reporting and compliance a plus;
  • Strong expertise in GAAP, audits, compliance, payroll, and nonprofit accounting;
  • Technology-savvy with expertise in enhancing and implementing systems. Familiarity with Microsoft Navision, Concur, and UKG is helpful but not required;
  • Understanding of process automation, including emerging uses of AI, and the ability to identify opportunities to streamline finance processes using technology;
  • Ability to make and effectively communicate strategic decisions to ensure sound financial governance and management;
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills;
  • Proven leader of people, communicator and problem solver with integrity, confidentiality, and a sense of humor;
  • Must have strong passion for the mission of the Human Rights Campaign and Human Rights Campaign Foundation.
